It isn’t a secret that the success of Grand Seiko is prompting Seiko proper to introduce “look-alike” models at lower price points that have a lot of the same flavor. Even though the Ananta watch family is no longer with us, so much of the creative ethos in those watches endures today - not only sharply angled, well-polished cases, but the particular look and feel of the also sharply cut watch dial features and hands, two areas in which the Presage Sharp-Edged watches certainly excel and why I like to think of Seiko as the “king of the diamond-cut dials.” The Ananta watches not only had cases inspired by traditional Japanese katana blades but were also designed to show off Seiko’s increasingly sophisticated case polishing practices. It was a big deal because it represented the first modern high-end Seiko products for sale both inside and outside of Japan. The look of the watch is finished off with a stainless-steel band.I was in Japan back in 2009 when the Seiko Ananta collection was launched. The dial of the watch is protected by sapphire crystal glass and housed in a stainless-steel case measuring 42.2mm and has an exhibition case back. The watch features a date wheel as well as a power reserve indicator. The dial of this watch features the three traditional hands as well as the GMT hand that is clearly distinguishable with its red highlights. SUMIIRO- This timepiece features a textured dial the colour of India ink with silver toned, LumiBrite luminescent hands and markers. The GMT hand can also be used as a dual time indicator. The GMT hand on each timepiece is in a different colour to stand out clearly from each dial. G.M.T RANGE: The watches in this collection are powered by the 8-beat per second GMT calibre 6R64. This series captured the simplicity and refinement of traditional Japanese aesthetics in its delicately textured dial and gave it a modern edge with its sharp and angular case construction. SHARP EDGE SERIES: The SEIKO Presage Sharp Edged Series is a design series that revealed a fresh and powerful expression of Japanese artistry. PRESAGE: The Presage range combines a Japanese aesthetic sense with traditional craftsmanship and Seiko’s mechanical watchmaking skills in an original collection that offers Japanese beauty, quality and long-lasting performance.
